Are Composite Doors or PVC Doors better?
Another question we're asked a lot is 'are composite doors better than pvc doors?'. It's not as easy as Composite Doors being better, or PVC doors being better, unfortunately. Each door type has their own set of benefits and features that makes them more suitable for certain properties or locations in your home. Let us guide you through them to help make a fully informed choice.
PVC Doors
PVC Doors have been around and used regularly for over thirty years. They're tried and tested and offer you an affordable new front door or new back door. It's quite common to see PVC front doors on existing properties but it is not that common to find them on new build estates, other than as back doors.
UPVC Doors are quite simple and are made up of three elements: a PVC frame that fixes into the structural opening, a PVC moving door sash that is connected to the frame with the hinges and finally the PVC infil door panel or glass unit. There are currently around 20 colour options in our range of PVC doors but generally PVC doors offer a reduced range of panel and glass designs than available in Composite Doors.
PVC Doors are typically cheaper than Composite Doors and some people make the argument that PVC doors are also better at coping with windy or rainy weather as they are 'double rebated' which is fancy talk for double sealed. The door sash has a seal that compresses against the PVC frame and vice versa. Some people refer to this as a storm seal door.
Composite Doors
Slightly over fifteen years ago the first generation of Composite Doors hit the market place. A Composite Door is actually a generic term for two materials used together to form a 'door slab'. There are timber and aluminium, timber and glass reinforced polyester (GRP) or fibreglass versions and even steel and timber options. The most common Composite Door used these days are highly condensed polyurethane in the core and GRP outer skins with a laminate outer skin for a low maintenance finish.
Composite doors are different to PVC Doors in that they only have two main components: the pvc frame that fixes into the structural opening and the composite door slab that is attached to the frame with hinges. Aesthetically, Composite Doors look different because the slab and frame finish flush on the inside. This is sometimes a criticism of the doors as they are generally one 'single rebated' and that's a concern to some. You can now get a double rebated door but it will cost slightly more.
Composite Doors can be finished in ANY RAL colour and have a much wider range of door styles and accompanying glass designs ultimately offering a higher degree of flexibility to the homeowner. It's increasinlgy common to see Composite Doors used on new build housing estates due to their traditional timber-esque finish, or their modern and stylish finish. They'll cost you a bit more than PVC Doors will but they offer something completely different.
So what is our advice?
If you're wanting to achieve individuality or something unique then we would definitely advise looking at the Composite Door range. Similarly, if you aren't on a super strict budget then composite doors are for you. The composite door range will start from around £850 installed but some of the fancier styles combined with side panels and custom glass have been above £2000 installed!
If you're wanting something new, pleasing to look at and something that offers great value for money then PVC doors may be the way forward. If you're just looking for a cheap and cheery rental property front door or a cost effective back door for your own home then we've got a range of PVC doors starting from £600 installed and ranging up to about £1400 installed for the much fancier models.
